As many of you may have noticed, our subdivision sign is in a poor state of maintainance. I don't know if this sign has been vandalized by those that pass by, and I suspect that this is the case. Do we have plans to put up a new sign?

Is there any news on being annexed into the city of Decatur? I have two young kids and am somewhat interested in the possibility of being in the city of Decatur school district.

Equifax Alert: The "Jury Duty" Scam

While you should remain vigilant of all potential identity theft threats, some are especially alarming. The "Jury Duty" scam is remarkably easy to fall for. Learn how it works so that you can stay safe if you receive this ominous call.

Imagine this scenario: you receive a call from a jury coordinator informing you that a warrant has been issued for your arrest due to your failure to appear for jury duty. When you explain that you never even received a summons for jury duty, the coordinator asks for your Social Security number and date of birth in order to verify your information and cancel the warrant. Of course you're willing to provide this information; there's obviously been a mistake and you want to avoid arrest at all costs. Problem is, this is all part of the scam. There never was a warrant, and you've just had your identity stolen.

This scam has been reported in 11 states so far and is growing. So if you receive a phone call that seems suspicious or threatening, don't panic. Simply ask for more information, the caller's supervisor, or a number at which you can reach them after doing more research. Nothing foils an identity thief like an educated response.

What's Going on with Glenlake Park Plans and Traffic?

Just got the following from the City and thought it might be useful:

Major renovations will begin on Glenlake Park during the week of March 23rd. This is the first comprehensive improvement to Glenlake Park in over 50 years. Work should be completed by the end of this year and will include new walking trails, pedestrian bridges, improved athletic fields, a new multi-purpose pavilion and an expanded dog park. Streambed restoration will improve water quality reduce downstream flooding and allow the stream to become an integral part of the park experience. A new bathhouse is currently underway and should be completed in time for the pool to reopen this Memorial Day.

While the swimming pool and tennis courts will remain open during construction, access to other areas of the park will be closed beginning the week of March 23rd. Significant excavation and the use of heavy construction equipment make it impossible to safely allow pedestrian access into and through the park. We understand that this work creates an inconvenience but to assure your safety and that we complete the park renovation as quickly as possible, access into the park must be closed.

To provide an alternative parking option during construction, we will close one lane of travel in each direction on Church Street and create on-street parking for residents who cannot walk to the Tennis Center and Glenlake Pool. Safe Routes to School detours around Glenlake Park have been outlined and can be viewed on the city's website at www.decaturga.com/glenlakemasterplan. These detour maps will also be shared with principals at Clairemont Elementary and Glennwood Academy for distribution to parents and students.

Smoke Alarm Problems?

Hi neighbors,

Our homes in some cases are ten years old or will soon be. The Smoke Alarms installed have a useful life of about ten years. If you are finding that your batteries are not lasting anywhere near a year or they have become very sensitive and you are having false alarms, it is time to replace the Smoke Alarm. I have had to change one and I have just ordered four more to replace the others. I found a good deal on Amazon.com. For my home, I was able to replace mine with BRK Brands 9120B Hardwire Smoke Alarm with battery backup. This is the current model that replaces the ones my home had. It required no new wiring or modification to the existing mount space. The cost was $11.99 per alarm plus shipping.

Our neighbor Michael Huey is the recipient of the 2008 Jack C. Hughston Phyisician of the year award from the Georgia Athletic training association . He is the executive director of student health and counseling services and a clinical assistant professor in the Department of Family and Preventive Medicine at Emory.

Coyote in the neighborhood

Hi Friends,

Our friends Dagmar and Mark Ebaugh, some swell folks who's back yard backs up to Carol Kelly's property and ours called to say that they heard a coyote in the area last night. I had heard rumours before this but trust these folks implicitly. Be careful with your pets, and please be aware of the possibility of this wild animal having contact with them.

In case you haven't seen any Western movies lately there are some coyote sounds available here.

Report from last night's annexation meeting

InDecatur has a good report here that is based in the City managers' responses to some of the questions put to them.

Pierce and I were discussing this issue today and he has seen some info that says our neighborhood is to be left out of the current plan.

Anyone have more info on this?
